“According to the Upaniṣads, without the mercy of Balarama, no one can attain the highest level of self-realization. The word bala does not refer to physical strength. No one can achieve spiritual perfection through physical strength. We need spiritual strength, which Balarama (Saṅkarṣaṇa) can bestow upon us. Ananta, or Śeṣa, represents the power that keeps the planets in their orbits. On the material level, we call this sustaining force gravity, but in reality, it is a manifestation of Saṅkarṣaṇa’s energy.

Balarama — or Saṅkarṣaṇa — is spiritual strength itself, the original spiritual master. Thus, Lord Nityānanda Prabhu, who is also an incarnation of Balarama, is the original spiritual master. The spiritual master therefore represents Balarama, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who bestows spiritual strength. The Caitanya-caritāmṛta states that the spiritual master is a manifestation of Kṛṣṇa’s mercy.”
